The Multicultural Business Scholars Program offers its scholars a wide range of opportunities to grow academically, personally, and professionally. But there is one program benefit that stands out for junior finance and accounting major Heather Hoffey — one-on-one meetings with Director of MBSP Steven Johnson Jr.

These individualized scholar/director meetings give scholars a chance to interact with Johnson and to receive guidance, coaching, or simply a sounding board regarding academic, personal, or professional matters.

For Hoffey, her meetings with Director Johnson are primarily personally and academically focused. At the beginning of the semester, Hoffey and Johnson set academic goals together, making sure to reflect upon those goals towards the end of the semester. At the end of the semester, she goes through each of her classes and reflects on her performance, class by class.

This past semester has been an exceptional challenge for scholars. Luckily for her and other MBSP scholars, according to Hoffey, Johnson is able to offer holistic support, including assistance from a mental health standpoint.

“Steven truly cares about each and every scholar, and it shows in the one-on-one meeting,” Hoffey said. “He wants to get to know you and assist in every way possible.”

From her one-on-one meetings, Hoffey has learned how to set both personal and academic goals while developing strong time-management and communication skills. She has also learned about various resources within the business school that support her academic endeavors.

This summer, Hoffey landed an internship with Netsmart Technologies, Inc. as a financial analyst and said she could not have done it without the network and guidance of MBSP.
