Student appreciates real-world experience gained in Jayhawk Consulting
Senior Jarrett Baker finds new challenges, builds new skills through program
Jarrett Baker is discovering his strengths at the School of Business. Stemming from curiosity and an interest to keep learning, the senior business administration major is involved with several groups and organizations around the school. He is the president of the Global Business Initiative Club, vice president of Consulting Club and a member of the business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi. This semester, he has added one more School of Business program to the mix: Jayhawk Consulting.
Through Jayhawk Consulting, selected students gains valuable experience working with clients from the Lawrence community and beyond. Led by Ryan Rains, director of entrepreneurship co-curricular programs, and Will Katz, faculty advisor and lecturer, students strengthen their communication and relationship skills.
Baker has found mentorship and guidance from the program’s leaders to tackle challenges head on, which has been his favorite part of the program.
“Mentorship serves as a tool to recognize the right way of doing your job,” Baker said. “You have professionals in your area guiding you to the best possible outcome.”
He said he also enjoys how fast-paced and interactive the work is and learning new processes and activities. He sees the long-term value in the communication, teamwork and client relations skills that he has honed through the program.
“These skills cannot be taught or learned in a classroom,” Baker said. “Real-world experience is invaluable as a college student. Jayhawk Consulting is a unique program; it offers real-world experience but with the difference that you have guidance and help from professionals.”
Jayhawk Consulting helps clients grow through data analysis and project development and offers KU students experiential learning by working for real clients.
