Student Spotlight: Mallory McKee
Marketing and finance junior Mallory McKee is a student ambassador for the School of Business.
What are you studying?
I am studying marketing and finance. I am also considering adding an international business concentration.
Why did you choose those majors?
After taking all the core business classes, I found myself enjoying both my marketing and finance classes. I liked learning about business-consumer relationships and how it affects the way an organization operates, but I also liked understanding the finances and investment analysis that it takes to run a successful business. I believed that these two majors would complement each other and give me a competitive edge, as I am able to understand two relatively different parts of a business.
What has been one of your best School of Business experiences?
One of my best School of Business experiences was getting to study abroad in China. I participated in a short-term study abroad program through the business school that was led by two faculty members. Along with 10 other business students, I got to travel to Beijing, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong visiting companies and exploring the culture. We met with U.S. and Chinese companies, including EY, Hallmark, Amazon and Huawei, and got insight on how international companies operate and what it is like to work abroad. This experience was nothing you could learn from a textbook, and I am grateful that the School of Business provides opportunities like this for its students.
What programs or groups are you involved with at the School of Business?
One program I have loved getting to be a part of is the Business Student Ambassador Program. I meet with prospective students and their families to give them insight on the School of Business and to give them tours of the building. I enjoy answering their questions and giving them my advice and perspective based on my experiences at KU.
Being involved in the School of Business is a great way to meet other students and faculty you may not otherwise interact with. It helps build your network and can lead to new opportunities you otherwise could have missed out on.
What is something that has really impacted your b-school career?
Getting selected to be one of the Koch Scholars at KU has significantly impacted my business school career. Not only has it taught me the importance of networking and taking advantage of opportunities presented, it has also given me an incredible scholarship to support my education.
What is the best part of being a Jayhawk?
My favorite part about being a Jayhawk is the strong community that is seen at KU. Everyone truly loves being a Jayhawk, and all of the alumni are incredibly supportive of their alma mater. In the world of business, building a strong network is extremely important, and as I get closer to graduating I already feel like I have built up many connections with professors, classmates and alumni.
