When doctor of physical therapy student Tim Turner decided to pursue an MBA, he had no background in business. But thanks to a partnership between the KU Schools of Health Professions and Business, he had the option to earn both degrees in 12 semesters.

When Turner completes his doctorate in May of 2021, he’ll also be prepared for the complicated health finance and management fields with business knowledge and experience.

“It has provided a wealth of understanding and, more importantly to me, a different lens that I can apply to situations that I am placed in,” Turner said of the MBA program.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Why did you decide to pursue a dual graduate degree?

The dual degree program at KU was an incredible opportunity to grow my knowledge base and obtain skills that I think will be helpful during my career. There is extra time and financial investment involved, but I think that the relationships and connections that I have made through this program are indispensable.

I planned to pursue an MBA at some point in my career, so when the opportunity and overwhelming support from friends and family to complete the program at this point in my life and academic career, I thought it was an opportunity I could not pass up.

What has been one of your favorite moments in the MBA program so far?

One of my favorite memories so far was enjoying the gathering that the Navy MBA/Petroleum Management officers hosted during our first semester. It was a great time to get together with our classmates to swap stories about previous jobs and different life events. It was extremely refreshing to talk outside of the classroom and get to know my classmates on a deeper level.

What has been the biggest challenge?

There was certainly a steep learning curve during the first semester. I have a very narrow understanding of business and the various topics we covered from previous schooling. However, the instructors and professors have done a phenomenal job of explaining topics so that all students can understand them.

What accomplishment, personally or professionally, are you most proud of?

I am most proud of interning for the Chicago Bears sports medicine team. I had a great experience working in professional sports and understanding how much really goes on behind the scenes that many fans don’t see when they view games on Sundays.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans are to work my way up in a physical therapy or health care organization, with my ideal role being one where I can treat patients a bit each week, while working with leadership to develop strategic initiatives for the future and work to solve current obstacles.
