The KU School of Business’ new home, Capitol Federal Hall, houses more than just classrooms and offices. The building was designed with an emphasis on interaction and innovation, and it’s full of spaces that will serve many purposes for students. Here’s a look at the top spaces for studying and hanging out:

J Cafe

Atrium
The new J Cafe in the atrium is surrounded by seating that is perfect for both groups and individuals. Whether you’re stopping for lunch or cramming before a quiz, this is a great and easy-to-access space.

TA Help Area

Second floor, north side
The TA help area in Summerfield Hall felt hidden away on the first floor. One goal in the new building’s design was to help remove the stigma of asking for help. Now that the TA help area is out in the open on the second floor, it will be easier than ever to access academic support.

Second-Floor Study Area

Second floor, east bridge
This area is perfect for students who need to focus. This space, which is near the TA help area on the second floor, was designed for productivity, with dividers between desks and a printer conveniently close-by.

The Hive

First floor, room 1057
With the dedicated workspace for students organizations and the many different seating options, the Hive (also called the Incubator) is sure to be a busy and productive space. Floor-to-ceiling windows span three sides, making the room bright and welcoming.

East Plaza

Just outside the Hive is an open, sunlit space full of tables. This area is perfect for everything from studying alone to having lunch with friends and is easily accessible from the central atrium or the Hive.

West Plaza

On the opposite side of the building is the West Plaza, which faces Allen Fieldhouse. With seating reminiscent of Wescoe Beach, this will be the perfect place to pass time on sunny days.

Stair Seating

Atrium
Every inch of Cap Fed Hall is meant to be functional. Students from the School of Architecture, Design and Planning designed and built one-of-a-kind seating that can be found on the stairs in the atrium.

Business Communication Center

First floor, room 1030S
With the new building comes a brand new Business Communication Center. The staff at the center will help students refine their writing and presentation skills, and students will be able to make appointments online.

Meeting Rooms

Second, third, fourth floors
Sometimes a little quiet can go a long way. The student meeting rooms in Cap Fed Hall create the perfect atmosphere for studying. These can be used by groups or individuals and are outfitted with technology that makes collaborative work easy.

Hallway Seating

It’s pretty common for students to have breaks between classes. In Summerfield, this meant sitting in the hall on cold, hard tile floors. At Cap Fed Hall, long, comfortable benches provide the perfect place to wait. These benches even have power outlets so that your electronics also will be able to survive.

Geometric Seating

Unique, geometric furniture can be found in throughout Cap Fed Hall and provides seating for both groups and individuals. They’re comfortable and outfitted with power outlets.
